Togo
Grained calfskin, soft hand, retains shape.
Togo is a Hermès calfskin with a fine pebbled grain. Among the most popular Birkin and Kelly leathers because it balances structure with softness, hides scratches, and ages predictably. Pebbling is uniform and small, never reptilian. The grain comes from a tumbling process — the leather is rotated in a drum with embossed plates that imprint texture as the calfskin dries.
History
Hermès introduced Togo in 1997 as a more practical alternative to Box Calf, which is beautiful but scratch-prone. Within five years it became the default leather for Birkin orders that did not specify otherwise. Togo's combination of light weight (relative to Clémence) and shape retention (relative to Swift) made it the answer to the most common buyer ask.
How to identify
Look for a uniform pebbled grain about 1-2mm across, with very subtle natural grain visible underneath if you tilt against the light. Togo absorbs water rather than beading it (Epsom beads), and feels slightly cushioned rather than rigid. Genuine Togo has a faint matte sheen; high-saturation colors like Rouge Casaque or Vert Cypress photograph slightly muted compared to Epsom in the same color.
Price impact
Togo is the baseline reference leather for Birkin and Kelly. Most colors widely available — small premium vs Epsom on similar colors, smaller than Box Calf, dramatically smaller than exotics. On secondary markets, Togo Birkin 30 in Noir or Étoupe defines the liquid median; rarer Togo colors like Rose Sakura or Vert Comics can trade 30-80% above that baseline because special-order pigments hold differently on Togo than on Epsom.

Care & maintenance
Wipe with a soft dry cloth weekly. Avoid leather conditioners — Togo's tumbled grain holds product in the pebbles and dulls over time. Stuff with shape inserts when not in use. Light rain is fine; heavy water exposure can leave permanent darker patches.
Frequently asked
Is Togo durable enough for daily use?
Yes. It is among the most practical Hermès leathers — the pebbled grain hides small scratches and is forgiving of casual contact. Avoid only sharp objects and prolonged water exposure.
How does Togo compare to Epsom for resale?
Togo and Epsom trade at near-identical levels on neutral colors. Epsom commands a meaningful premium on bright/special-order colors because the embossed grain locks pigment saturation that Togo cannot match.
Why does Togo go soft over time?
Tumbled-grain calfskins relax with use. Slight slouch on the sides of a Birkin 30 after 2-3 years is normal and not a defect. Use shape inserts if you prefer to preserve crisp sides.
