Clémence

Clémence is a soft, slouchy leather made from baby bull. It drapes more than Togo, develops visible shape changes with use, and has a denser matte surface. It is the heaviest of the popular Hermès calfskins and bullskins. Common on Picotin and Garden Party, used for Birkins and Kellies in some color releases but contributes meaningful extra weight that buyers should factor in.

History

Clémence has been part of the Hermès leather range since the 1980s. It pre-dates Togo and was originally favored for its soft, almost suede-like hand. Modern Hermès Clémence is firmer than vintage examples, but it still slouches more than any other production leather.

How to identify

Look for a slightly larger, less uniform grain than Togo and a denser feel. Clémence has a darker, more matte appearance — colors look slightly muted compared to Togo. The bag will visibly soften and droop at the corners with use; this is normal, not damage.

Price impact

Slight discount on Birkin/Kelly vs Togo, typically 5-12% — driven by buyers preferring lighter and more structured calfskins. Picotin and Garden Party are exceptions because Clémence is the standard expectation on those models.

Care & maintenance

Stuff aggressively when not in use, especially first six months. Avoid heavy contents — Clémence amplifies the weight inside. Re-shape gently if corners deform.
