Chèvre

Goatskin, scratch-resistant, lightweight.

Chèvre is Hermès goatskin with a fine ridge pattern that runs in a near-parallel direction. It is lightweight, structured, and almost impossible to scratch. Often used for linings, but Chèvre exteriors (Chèvre de Coromandel, Chèvre Mysore) are highly collected and trade at meaningful premium.

History

Chèvre has been a Hermès staple for over a century. The two principal modern variants — Coromandel (more pronounced grain) and Mysore (finer grain) — derive from different goatskin sources. Both share the lightness and scratch resistance that distinguish goatskin from calfskin.

How to identify

Visible parallel ridges in the grain, finer than Togo's pebbles. Goatskin has a slight natural sheen that calfskins do not. Bags in Chèvre feel noticeably lighter than the same model in Togo.

Price impact

Significant premium when used as exterior on Birkin/Kelly — typically 30-80% above Togo equivalents because Chèvre exteriors are produced in small quantities and most allocations go to top-tier clients via HSS.

Used by: Hermès

Care & maintenance

Lowest-maintenance Hermès leather alongside Epsom. Wipe with dry cloth. Hold color well — Chèvre Rose Sakura is among the most-collected pink Birkins because of the saturation Chèvre achieves.

Frequently asked

Are Chèvre exterior bags available retail?

Very rarely outside Special Order. New-production Chèvre Birkin and Kelly typically come through HSS or single-piece releases at flagship boutiques.
