Swift

Smooth calfskin, color-saturated, scratches show.

Swift is a smooth, almost matte Hermès calfskin. It renders pigment with exceptional depth — special colors and Sellier Kellys are often produced in Swift specifically because the leather absorbs and reflects color in a way no other Hermès material matches. Easily scratches, but micro-marks self-heal under light buffing with a soft cloth. Not for the bag-on-the-floor type.

History

Swift replaced Gulliver in the early 2000s. Both were smooth calfskins, but Swift's tannage produced richer color saturation and slightly better scratch self-healing. Today it sits between Box Calf (very smooth, polished) and Togo (pebbled) as the most color-forward Hermès calfskin.

How to identify

Smooth surface with very fine natural grain visible at close range. Slightly softer than Box Calf, slightly more polished than the matte appearance of Epsom. Holds rich color depth — Swift Rouge Garance is the textbook example of how a single color name can look completely different across leathers.

Price impact

Premium on color-forward variants (Rouge H, Bleu de Malte, Vert Cypress can trade 20-40% above Togo equivalents). Discount when used for everyday neutrals like Noir or Étoupe — most buyers prefer Togo's pebbled forgiveness in those colors.

Care & maintenance

Wipe surface scratches with a soft microfiber cloth in a circular motion — most micro-scratches lift in 30-60 seconds. Avoid hand creams and lotions, which leave permanent dark patches on Swift.

Frequently asked

Will scratches on Swift really disappear?

Most superficial scratches self-heal with light buffing. Deeper cuts that penetrate the topcoat are permanent. Swift is forgiving of casual contact but not of keys or jewelry rubbing.

Is Swift the same as Veau Swift?

Yes. 'Veau Swift' is the formal Hermès name; Swift is the everyday term. Both refer to the same leather.
