Caviar

Pebbled calfskin, durable, scratch-hiding.

Caviar is Chanel's pressed-grain calfskin with a distinctive small-pebble texture resembling caviar roe. The grain is mechanically pressed, similar to Hermès Epsom but with a rounder pebble shape. More durable than Lambskin, hides wear, retains shape over years. Most modern Classic Flap production is Caviar.

History

Caviar entered the Classic Flap range in the 1980s as a more practical alternative to Lambskin. Chanel's response to the realization that Lambskin Classic Flaps required handle-with-care levels of attention. Today Caviar is the default, with Lambskin reserved for seasonal and special editions.

How to identify

Small, round, pressed pebbles uniform across the bag. Caviar has a slight surface sheen — not as matte as Hermès Epsom. Holds boxy silhouette indefinitely. Visible quilting stays crisp; Caviar Classic Flaps never get the soft slouchy look of well-worn Lambskin.

Price impact

Baseline finish on Classic Flap. Modest premium vs Lambskin on the same color and size because of demand for durability — typically 8-15% on secondary market. Wide selection of colors available; Black Caviar with GHW is the textbook liquid Chanel configuration.

Care & maintenance

Wipe with dry cloth. Caviar is forgiving of casual contact — small scratches and rubs essentially invisible. Avoid prolonged water and direct sun, both of which can mute the surface sheen over years.

Frequently asked

Does Caviar get soft over time?

Slightly, but far less than Lambskin. Most buyers report Caviar Classic Flaps look essentially identical after 5 years to how they looked at purchase.

Is Caviar 'less luxurious' than Lambskin?

Lambskin has a more refined hand and is preferred for formal use. Caviar is more practical for everyday. Neither is objectively higher quality — both are full-grain calfskin produced by Chanel's tanneries.

How does Chanel Caviar compare to Hermès Epsom?

Both are embossed/pressed-grain calfskins. Caviar has a rounder pebble; Epsom has a tighter cross-hatch. Caviar is slightly softer; Epsom slightly more rigid. Resale liquidity favors Caviar simply because Chanel produces more of it.
