Epsom

Embossed calfskin, stiff, holds vibrant color.

Epsom is Hermès' embossed calfskin with a fine cross-hatch grain. The grain is pressed into the leather rather than naturally tumbled, which produces a uniform geometric texture that is unmistakable in person. It is lightweight, very structured, and extremely resistant to scratches. The pressing process compacts surface fibers and locks dye saturation, making it the preferred leather for special-order bright colors.

History

Epsom replaced Courchevel in the early 2000s. Courchevel had a slightly larger embossed pattern; Epsom refined it into the finer cross-hatch we know today. Hermès kept the structural and color-holding advantages of an embossed leather while making it lighter and more elegant. Today most special-order Birkins and the entire HSS color range trade in Epsom.

How to identify

Look for a tight, machine-uniform cross-hatch pattern with no organic variation. Epsom is rigid enough that a Birkin in Epsom holds its boxy silhouette indefinitely — no slouch even after years. Water beads on the surface (Togo absorbs). Saturated colors photograph brighter than in any other leather; this is the easiest visual tell on Instagram and reseller photos.

Price impact

Comparable to Togo on baseline colors. Epsom commands a meaningful premium when paired with special-order shades like Vert Anis, Rose Sakura, Anemone, or Magnolia — typically 15-40% above the same color in Togo because Epsom renders the pigment more vividly. Sellier Kelly construction is more common in Epsom than Togo, adding another premium layer.

Care & maintenance

Epsom is the lowest-maintenance leather Hermès produces. Wipe with a dry cloth, no conditioner needed. The embossed grain hides micro-scratches and small marks. Avoid only sharp punctures — a deep cut in Epsom is visible permanently because the pressed grain cannot self-heal.

Frequently asked

Why is Epsom called 'the special order leather'?

Because the embossed grain locks dye saturation, allowing Hermès to produce vivid bright colors and bi-tone combinations that Togo cannot render the same way. Most HSS (Horseshoe Special Order) Birkins are Epsom.

Does Epsom develop patina?

Minimally. The pressed grain resists wear and patina. This is intentional — Epsom is the answer for buyers who want their bag to look like new for decades.

Is Epsom lighter than Togo?

Yes, marginally — typically 100-200g lighter on a Birkin 30. Both are lighter than Clémence.
