Sellier

Outside-stitched, structured silhouette.

Sellier is the Hermès Kelly construction style where the leather seams are stitched on the outside, producing a structured rigid silhouette with crisp 90-degree corners. More formal aesthetic than Retourné. Box Calf and Epsom are the most common Sellier leathers because they hold the geometry cleanly; soft leathers like Clémence are rarely produced in Sellier.

History

Sellier construction traces to the original 1956 Kelly bag — Grace Kelly's Sac à dépêches was Sellier in Box Calf. The Sellier silhouette became iconic through her 1956 LIFE Magazine cover photograph. The construction has remained largely unchanged since.

Price impact

Sellier Kellys command a premium in Box Calf (heritage configuration) and Epsom (modern HSS favorite). Comparable to Retourné in Togo on standard production. Sellier in special-order colors typically trades 15-30% above Retourné equivalents because the construction is more labor-intensive and signals formal/collectible intent.
