RHW (Ruthenium Hardware)

Dark gunmetal, rare, sport-leaning.

RHW stands for Ruthenium Hardware — ruthenium-plated metal fittings producing a dark gunmetal appearance, sometimes called Black Hardware. Rare on Hermès Birkin/Kelly outside special editions, more common on Chanel So Black editions where every metal fitting is finished in black to match the all-black leather.

History

Hermès has used ruthenium plating sparingly since the 2000s, primarily on special-order pieces. Chanel formalized the all-black aesthetic with the So Black collection, where ruthenium plating extends to chain links, hinges, and the CC turn-lock.

How to identify

Dark grey to near-black appearance with cool sheen. Distinct from brushed PHW (which is matte silver, not dark) and from RGHW (rose gold). RHW pairs predominantly with dark or saturated leather colors.

Price impact

Strong premium on Hermès Birkin/Kelly with RHW because production is small. Chanel So Black editions command 30-60% premium over Black Caviar GHW because of limited production and matching aesthetic appeal.
