PHW (Palladium Hardware)

Silver-tone metal plating, neutral, ages well.

PHW stands for Palladium Hardware — palladium-plated metal fittings used as the standard hardware on most modern Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags. Neutral silver appearance, oxidation-resistant, ages without visible tarnish over decades. The default hardware specification — premium-priced variants typically pair with PHW unless GHW (Gold Hardware) or rarer finishes are specified.

History

Hermès adopted palladium plating in the mid-1990s as a more stable replacement for older silver-tone platings. Palladium oxidizes less aggressively than silver and matches the cool-tone aesthetic preferred for everyday luxury at the turn of the millennium. PHW remains the most-allocated hardware finish across the modern Birkin and Kelly range.

How to identify

Cool silver-grey tone with neutral sheen. Should not tarnish, yellow, or develop spots. The clochette key holder and turn-lock are the easiest fittings to inspect for finish consistency. Hardware engraving (Hermès stamp) should be sharp and crisp; soft or blurry engraving is a counterfeit indicator.

Price impact

Baseline reference — no inherent premium or discount. PHW pairs neutrally with most colors and is preferred for buyers who want the bag to read modern and understated.

Care & maintenance

Wipe with soft dry cloth. Avoid silver polishes — they remove the palladium plating. Hardware should last the lifetime of the bag without intervention.

Frequently asked

Is PHW the same as silver?

No. PHW is palladium-plated, not silver-plated. Palladium is more durable and does not tarnish like silver.

Does PHW affect resale value?

PHW is the baseline against which other hardware finishes are priced. Most rare hardware finishes (RHW, brushed) command premium relative to PHW.
