Lambskin

Smooth, luxurious calfskin from lamb, delicate.

Lambskin is Chanel's soft, smooth lamb leather. It has an extremely luxurious tactile quality — many collectors describe it as butter-soft — but is prone to scratches, water spots, and color rubbing at high-friction points like the quilting peaks and corners. Most often used for limited and seasonal Classic Flap colors and for Boy Bag editions where the brand wants a higher-touch presentation.

History

Lambskin was the original Classic Flap leather — Coco Chanel's 1955 2.55 reissued in 1983 by Karl Lagerfeld was Lambskin. Caviar emerged later as a durability alternative. Today the brand uses Lambskin primarily for limited editions because of the labor cost of inspecting and selecting hides without surface flaws.

How to identify

Smooth surface with very fine natural pores visible at close range. Pliable, almost cushion-like hand. Quilting peaks sit slightly higher than on Caviar because the leather is thinner. Color sits richer on Lambskin than on Caviar in equivalent dye batches.

Price impact

Premium on limited-color Classic Flap and rare Boy editions — 20-50% above Caviar equivalents in the same configuration. Discount vs Caviar on everyday-color resale (Noir Lambskin Classic Flap medium trades 5-15% below Caviar equivalent on secondary market) because of buyer concerns about long-term durability.

Care & maintenance

Handle with attention. Avoid rough surfaces, jewelry contact, denim color transfer. Some collectors apply a leather protector spray; results vary by spray and we don't endorse a specific product. Water spots are typically permanent.

Frequently asked

Should I buy Lambskin if I plan to use the bag daily?

Most enthusiasts recommend Caviar for daily use and Lambskin for occasional or formal wear. If your daily routine involves laptop bag situations, restaurant chair backs, and frequent contact with rough surfaces, Caviar is the safer choice.

Does Lambskin scratch easily?

Yes. Fingernails, jewelry, and zippers leave visible marks. Many can be lightly buffed; deep marks are permanent.

Is Lambskin worth the premium?

Depends on use case. For collectors who value tactile experience and present the bag formally, yes. For daily-driver buyers, Caviar provides better long-term value retention.
