Lambskin

Lambskin is Chanel's soft, smooth lamb leather. It has an extremely luxurious tactile quality — many collectors describe it as butter-soft — but is prone to scratches, water spots, and color rubbing at high-friction points like the quilting peaks and corners. Most often used for limited and seasonal Classic Flap colors and for Boy Bag editions where the brand wants a higher-touch presentation.

History

Lambskin was the original Classic Flap leather — Coco Chanel's 1955 2.55 reissued in 1983 by Karl Lagerfeld was Lambskin. Caviar emerged later as a durability alternative. Today the brand uses Lambskin primarily for limited editions because of the labor cost of inspecting and selecting hides without surface flaws.

How to identify

Smooth surface with very fine natural pores visible at close range. Pliable, almost cushion-like hand. Quilting peaks sit slightly higher than on Caviar because the leather is thinner. Color sits richer on Lambskin than on Caviar in equivalent dye batches.

Price impact

Premium on limited-color Classic Flap and rare Boy editions — 20-50% above Caviar equivalents in the same configuration. Discount vs Caviar on everyday-color resale (Noir Lambskin Classic Flap medium trades 5-15% below Caviar equivalent on secondary market) because of buyer concerns about long-term durability.
