GHW stands for Gold Hardware — yellow-gold-plated metal fittings used across Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. Across all major houses, GHW commands a small but consistent premium over silver-tone alternatives on equivalent variants, driven by warmer aesthetic and association with formal/jewelry-coordinated use.

History

Gold-tone hardware has been a luxury house standard since the 1950s. Hermès Kelly was offered in both gold and silver tones from the model's earliest production. Chanel Classic Flap's iconic CC turn-lock has always been available in gold tone, and Coco Chanel herself favored the warmer presentation.

How to identify

Warm yellow-gold sheen, not the cooler tone of rose gold or champagne. Hermès GHW is brass plated with gold; Chanel GHW is brass plated with 24k gold (newer production) or 18k (older). Watch for finish discoloration on heavily-used pieces — Chanel's gold-plating wears faster than Hermès' on high-friction points like turn-locks and chain rings.

Price impact

5-15% premium vs PHW or SHW on equivalent variants. Chanel Black Caviar Medium with GHW is the textbook example — historically trades 8-12% above the SHW equivalent. On Hermès, GHW premium is typically 5-10% vs PHW for the same leather and color.
